The European Union is the largest provider of Development Aid in the world. In addition to the UK Bi-lateral Development Programme (which is the second largest in the world) the UK also disperses sizeable development support through the European Commission.

In PNG the European Commission has had a development presence for more than 30 years. European development support is the second largest provider of development assistance, after Australia, in PNG. The European Commission Office administers, on behalf of European Union Member States, more than K570 million. The development programme in PNG focuses on: support to rural economic development and support to human resource development, in particular basic education and vocational training.
