Climate change

carteret island

The Carteret Islands, located north-east of mainland PNG has already experienced the rise of sea-level, resulting in the re-housing of residents.

Climate Change remains the single largest threat to planet earth. The UK and PNG work closely together to mitigate the causes of human induced climate change and identify adaptation projects to help those affected.

The UK and PNG Offices of Climate Change are in regular contact and committed to developing their partnership in the run-up to the UNFCCC meeting in Copenhagen in December 2009. In addition there continues to be close and regular contact between Prime Minister Brown and Prime Minister Somare on Climate Change issues. The UK High Commissioner is also the co-chair of the PNG Development Partners Climate Change Forum.

In PNG, the UK High Commission has a Climate Change Programme partnering the PNG Government, NGOs and academic institutions in a number of Climate Change focused projects in the last 12 months.

These include :

  • the production of an awareness Climate Change booklet for government;
  • a Climate Change awareness seminar;
  • support to the UPNG Remote Sensing Laboratory resulting in the production of a National Carbon Index and the first comprehensive study on the impact on bio-mass resulting from selective logging to be conducted in the region;
  • a successful children's awareness competition in rural PNG.
