Applying for a UK passport in Papua New Guinea

All British passport applications in the Pacific region including Papua New Guinea will now be processed at the regional passport production centre in Wellington.

The British High Commission in Port Moresby will remain the point of entry for passport services in PNG.  Once your application has been checked by BHC staff in Port Moresby, it will be sent by courier to Wellington for processing.

How to apply

Exactly the same as before - at the BHC in Port Moresby. The cost of the passport will be the same, however there will now be an additional courier charge of PGK 225.  Shipment rates may vary depending on weights and are subject to changes without notice.

To apply for a new passport, you need to:
1. Read the guidance notes to help you to complete your application form
2. Initial each page of your application form in the box provided.  Your application will not be accepted if you don't.
3. Sign the application within the signature box - your signature will not be scanned onto your passport if it is outside the box
4. Enclose two identical passport photographs taken within the last month and relevant supporting documents
5. Pay the correct fees

If you are renewing your passport, you must include your existing passport together with your application.

The process

Consular staff will check the application and make sure that all requirements have been met and that relevant supporting documentation is in order before sending the application to Wellington.  So to avoid delays, please take a moment to ensure that you have the correct documents.  If you are not sure what to include with your application, then please see our passport documents section.

Production time

Upon receipt of a correctly completed application, the passport team in Wellington will aim to issue new passports in line with our Consular Business Target commitment to deliver 90% of passports to customers within 10 working days.  However, using a courier service may add to the production time.  We aim to have the whole process completed and your new passport back with you within 4 weeks.

In the meantime you must:

Look after your passport
Check its validity (Passports can be renewed up to 9 months before they expire.  The extra time will be added on to the new passport's validity)
If you do not have a full validity passport (6 months or more), you will need to allow extra time to obtain one.

The British High Commission in Port Moresby will continue to issue, without the need to consult Wellington, Emergency and Temporary Passports for people who need to travel quickly.  If you are a frequent traveller, there is also the possibility to have more than one valid passport.

If you are unsure, or have questions on passport renewal, please do contact the passport team at the British High Commission in Port Moresby for further advice and help.  Our details are:
